What is coal ? Coal is fossil fuels. Coal can be burned, formed from sediment, organic rock primarily composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Coal is formed from plants that have consolidated between other rock strata and modified by a combination of the influence of pressure and heat for million of years so as to form a layer of coal.
